Finch Chicks!
« on: February 17, 2009, 11:18:32 AM »

My elderly zebra finch couple, Eric and Ariel, are housed with my pied zebra hen Pie.  Over the last year, they've brooded several nest fulls of eggs...but Eric is a murderous man, and tends to chuck the hatching eggs out of the nest.  In all, they've managed to raise only two chicks to fledging.

Pie and Ariel had been busy over the past month.  There were ten eggs in their nest.  A few days ag, Eric started his usual games...I was finding an egg a day, partially zipped, on the cage floor.  Darn him, I thought, back to his old tricks.

Well, this morning they have two fluffy chicks, happy and well fed in there!  I'm crossing my fingers that he won't chuck one of them, but they've NEVER made it this far with more than one...

There are still three eggs in the nest, but they look white...so I'm thinking they were no good.

 :congrats3: Can you remove Eric from the cage for a few weeks? I had to do that with Ethel who plucked her baby.

All I have to put him in were I to do it is a transport cage...I've always said I don't so much care how well these two do reproductively because of their age - I just want them to be happy.  Being so well bonded, I don't think he'd do well removed.  Still, the baby killing breaks my heart.  So far, so good!

Craigslist around here usually has cages pretty cheap. I put the cages next to each other, and there was no separation anxiety. Darned Eric, needs a little more nurture in his nature.
