Our Newest Addition...A Donkey!
« on: July 31, 2008, 11:36:43 AM »
Well, Ben finally got his Mini Donk!  We picked him up late last night.  Ben has named him Don.  He's a 2002 Frosted Spotted jack.  He's super sweet, super loud, and cart trained.  He'll be spending 2-3 weeks in quarantine...and then we're not exactly sure where he'll get to go.  We have Sam the mini horse gelding who we might be able to house with Don...just not sure yet.  We're in the process of finding him a wife or two.

He is in despirate need of some hoof work and a bath, and has been a little beaten up by a pasture mate...but I'm sure we'll have him looking good in no time.

Any advice on care is more than welcome, this is the first ass I've ever had and I'm aware they're different than horses.  The feed I've purchased for him is a 10% pellet.  The feed man recommended about 1/2 cup twice a day along with our grass hay.

Nice boy you got there Kate.
Dont give him any sweet feed, if you do feed him only give him oats and hay and pasture. We learned the hard way as they dont metabolize the molasses wll and get kinda crazy and will put on too much weight. Jack our donkey had lots of hoof problems because we didnt know this. All he gets not is hay, oats and pasture. They love to eat the weeds like goats. Yep it was live and learn with outs and now he is a sweet boy again. Also they either like you or they dont, kinda like a mule...  :congrats5:
