How long to bottle feed?

How long do you have to bottle feed a Holstein calf? We just saw an ad for some bottle calves and we're looking at getting one to feed out and butcher.

LOL I'll bet someone on here knows, I can tell you not to bottle them too long (we did and their hair started falling out, too high a protien diet) the vet told us to stop or we would kill them with kindness.

But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.' - Theodore Roosevelt 1907

Yikes! I just read a site that said 6 weeks. That doesn't seem like very long. Dh is leary of us getting one to "feed out". He fears it will become a pet beings how I seem to get attached...

Get two or more, they can be kind of delicate-the drop calves we used to buy were anyway. And you can tell him they might become pets, but once they are big, they can be so distructive it shouldn't be hard to let them go. Picture if you will, a thousand pounds with a tongue like sand paper that wants to lick your arm, or bap you with its head. Without meaning too they can send you flying, oh and they need shots and their feet trimmed too.

They will get very attached to you, if you don't want that then feed and leave, don't wait around pet them and you know stuff like that, holsteins are like big babie's.

Oh and don't name them unless it is spare ribs or beef roast.  That is what I am planning.
