Guess What I Got For Easter?!?
« on: March 27, 2005, 08:00:22 PM »
a couple weeks ago, my daughter & i were in the tractor supply buying feed for the goats & dogs,  they had some rabbits in there & she threw a fit for one.  so naturally i had to but 2, i didn't want the little rabbit to be lonely.  so day before yesterday i went to the local co-op to pick up some black oil sunflower seeds for the wild birds, & to my surprise there was a guy in the parking lot selling rabbits, ducks, chickens, goats & peafowl.  we had to get out & look at them, but told my daughter that we couldn't buy any. well, to make a long story a little shorter, i ended up buying 5 more.  i went yesterday & picked up the lop that the guy bred for me that night.  so we ought to be having some babies in about a month.

:full-rofl:  I can just see you telling your daughter 'no, we can't get anymore' and then turn around and buy five!  I'll bet she had a sneaky grin hidden.

she knows what a push over i am when it comes to critters.  that's the reason i got the doe lop & had her bred.  i get more rabbits in about a month.  i'm lucky i didn't have to sleep in the (dog, goat, rabbit) house anyway, hubby wasn't with me when i got the rabbits.

that just gives me one more thing i have to get done.  build a place to put the rabbits.  right now they're on the closed in back porch, but they have to go outside pretty soon.  i might keep the doe that is pregnant, on the porch, so i can keep a close eye on her.  i reckon i have turned into a regular animal nut.  it's very habit forming.  hubby say he would like to have some peafowl, of course that was right down my alley, i want some too.  but after i told him what they cost for a pair, he decided he didn't want any after all.  i guess i'll just have to save up money & just bring a pair home one day while i'm out doing some shopping.

she's doing fine.  i still have about 9 more days to wait on the babies.  that is if the breeding took.  if not i'll have to take her back for another visit.  i can't wait to see the babies, as i have never seen a baby bunny.

Denise,

Be prepared for what looks like ugly little bald mice!!  They are not cute until they come into their fur, then they are adorable!!

Word of advice, once she has had them, do not touch, nor let anyone touch, them.  The doe will likely kill them if she smells human on them before they come into their fur.  If you have to touch them, for example if one gets pulled or pushed out of the nesting box, use a rubber glove or washcloth to pick it up, and only handle it long enough to get it back into the nesting box.  Usually by the end of the first week you will see fur on them, and them a week later they will venture out of the nesting box, at that time it is safe to handle them.

Congrats on the bunny. I hope you have babies soon. You sound like me I tell my little girl no and what do I do. I get her a puppy to play with when already have 3 dogs but I can't say no. Now I fixing to get into breeding rabbits for a friend to sell and eat. Even chickens soon when I get everything done. Plus more goats.

Again congrats on the bunny and I hope she does have babies.

i can't wait to see the little naked bunnies.  the guy i got her from said she usually has at least seven & is a very good mama.  he tried to sell me his entire bunch of rabbits, the other day when i went to get a couple cages from him.  i had to turn him down.  i do know my hubby's limits. lol.  i have 3 more pair of rabbits that aren't old enough to breed yet, plus i'm going to get a male lop from him out of a different litter, when they are old enough.  so i figure i'll have enough rabbits around here in a few months.  maybe by that time i'll have my rabbit barn build like i want it.

good news..... bad news

good news:  mama lop had her babies on schedule.

bad news:  all but 2 were born dead.  & i don't think she is going to take care of them.  she didn't have them in her nest.  i put on some rubber gloves & picked them up & put them in her nest, but she hasn't been back to them.  i guess i'll just have to wait & see.  is there any way to raise newborn rabbits?  i can see them moving under the fur she pulled, so i know they are still alive, but i don't want to handle them more than i have too.

i went out several times throughout the night & the babies are still alive.  i checked on them this morning & they are really squirming around in the nest, so i think she is taking care of them when i'm not looking.  i can't wait until they get old enough i can hold them, without worrying about the mom rejecting them.
