I like bantams, but that's partly because I like either 'little' versions of things or 'huge' (as in draft horses) versions of things.

Mind you, I went to that webpage posted in another thread and was looking at the turkeys thinking.. some of these rarer breeds are really nice looking.

But I could never kill it, never ever.  Maybe I could have the butcher kill it, but don't think they do poultry around here.  And turkeys aren't much use without killing come novembers...  right?

One thing about Bantams, is...with small chickens comes small eggs. I have a hard time selling my bantam eggs, so I use them for my baking and for omeletes. If you are wanting to sell eggs to help with feed costs, you will want standard size birds. With all the eggs I sell, it pays for all my chicken feed and shavings, all my goat feed (except for hay)and shavings.
Around here, there are farmers everywhere willing to butcher for you. In most states they charge a buck a bird. I don't know how much they charge for turkeys.
There are a few breeds of turkeys that can live long healthy lives, but most need to be butchered as their hearts can't handle the rate at which they grow and they die of heart failure, or have severe leg problems.

Renart, Judy raised Buff Orps. Their eggs are fabulous!

I used to have chickens,... at that time I had
40 rhode island reds-I ordered them and raised them up in the brooder in my basement.
then came the banties around 20 of them-my favorite. Hey those eggs aren't so small once you crack them in the pan!! They do look little though.
and I had a mean little white silkie,..he was sooo sweet as a baby, then the little rooster got an attitude, little stink would fly up in my face and attack,..and I thought it liked me!!!  OF course he had ALLLL of those hens and eggs to watch over,.guess he was protecting them.
I think I had 6 of the black o(something)
6 of the buff ofington(bad spelling here)
12 of those white chickens that lay the white eggs,..I can't remember the name now,..but see we had to have a few white eggs for easter coloring!!

I have 3 coops and my other half has one.
I had a lot of breeds I wanted before this spring and now have most of them. I've told myself so more but that could change.
My layer's coop has about 40 residents, with some hatching today  :D
australorps
SL wyandottes
ameraucanas
rhode island reds
delawares
standard cochins (black & blue)

I had a seperate silkie coop but just merged the hens and a couple roosters in my bantam coop. The silkie coop is now a batchelor pad for extra silkies, frizzles and the polish roosters.

My bantam coop houses
cochins (black)
frizzles
silkies(white, black, blue and splash)
mille D'Uccles
BB reds
salmon faverolles
silver, gold and buff polish hens
There's 50-60 in there.

TJ's coop includes
OEG's
barred rocks
australorps
ameraucanas

Our neighbor works at the city animal shelter so all coops have some rescued chickens in them also.

We have our turkeys and guineas housed in a seperate building.

thanks Nancy. He has sired some on my prettiest smooth feathered hens. They are my favorites, the smooth feathered ones from a frizzle hatch. Their feathers are like velvet.

Some people call over frizzed birds frazzles.
These are ones that are from a frizzle to frizzle breeding. They will wind up bare naked if you're not careful.

We really like our ameraucanas. They have some beautiful colors and I love those muffs on them. People enjoy the colored eggs, too.

Any day now. Some breeds take a little longer than others but the general rule of thumb is around 5 months.

Hey, cool!!  When did we get a chicken board?  This is too cool!  Yay!   :D

I happen to have four beautiful little fancy banty hens that I had shipped to me from Texas late this past spring - one gorgeous red frizzle Cochin, one buff Cochin mix, one blue cochin mix, and one white and blue Cochin/Silky mix.  They are the cutest little birds, I just adore them.  I actually got them to be friends for my first chicken Beverly, who was a broiler hen who fell off a chicken transport truck, and I picked her up off the side of the road.  Beverly was wonderful, but she only lived for a few months.   :(  But her little lady friends are delightful, and Beverly trained Simone, the Silky/Cochin mix, to boss them around very well!

I'll see if I can get some pictures to post next weekend!   :)
