'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.' - Theodore Roosevelt 1907

Difficult decision- prayer please!
Mom, Dad and Andrew met with the doctor this afternoon to discuss treatment options and are now faced with a difficult decision to make within the next 2 days.

Option 1: Spinal Surgery and surgery around the aorta to remove the cancer, followed by low dose radiation and chemo. This will give Andrew a 70% chance of removing the cancer. Obviously, with this option of surgery, comes a very high risk of complications (such as nicking the aorta or spine).

Option 2: High dose radiation, and chemo- which would damage the heart, lungs and spine. This would give Andrew a 50% chance of being free of the cancer.

Obviously both these options sound horrible, and it is so hard to decide! We are just praying that God will grant us wisdom and peace with whatever decision is to be made.
Thank you all for the prayers- they are greatly needed, especially over the next few days.
Love to you all!

This was posted yesterday, which means Andrew will be in surgery in about an hour (8:30am PST) Please life Andrew up in prayer.

Surgery in the morning!
Dad just called the doctor and made the decision to go ahead with with surgery in the morning. Dad was able to speak with quite a few trusted, knowledgeable, Godly people- and have all prayed- and have decided to go ahead with the surgery.
He will be admitted tomorrow morning at 8:30 am and will hopefully be the first surgery of the day.
Please be praying for the surgery to go smoothly, for the doctors guidance and a steady hand, and for Andrew to be cancer free tomorrow night!
Thank you all!

Just now going into surgery!
It is about 12:30 now, and they finally wheeled him off into the O.R. It was so hard to see him go, but we are praying non-stop (as we have been for the past 4 months!)
We were able to meet with both the general surgeon and the spine surgeon who will be supporting the team. They were very knowledgeable and nice, and we don't know for sure what the outcome will be. But for now, they plan on taking out part of the 6th rib, and shaving off parts of the 5th and 7th rib, as well as removing the tumor. They aren't sure if they will have to remove part of the vertebrae. So that is our prayer now, that they can get it all without having to mess with the lungs or the spine.
Thank you for all your prayers- he got a late start, and they said they booked the O.R. for 240 minutes (about 4 hours) - so as soon as we know more- I will update again.
Thank you for all your texts, calls and emails- we so appreciate the support and prayers. He knows how loved he is.

Out of surgery!

They took out the 6th rib and 1/2 of both 5th and 7th.
They think they got all the cancer- but we will have to wait for the pathologist report to know for sure.
They did have to take part of the lung. But the doctors didn't think that should be a big deal. He will be in pediatric icu for at least 24 hours, and we don't know how long he will be recovering at the hospital.
He is awake, communicating and breathing on his own.

Praise God!!!!!!!!!!

Day 2 of recovery!
Today has been a much better day for Andrew!
Physical therapists came this morning and helped Andrew get up and walk a little bit, and it caused him a lot of pain, and after taking a pain pill- he threw up :( but thankfully he hasn't been nauseous since then!

The doctor didn't take out his chest tube because Andrew is still draining too much fluid (about twice as much as he should..) so, they will be keeping it in a while longer.
We still have no idea when he will be able to come home- and we aren't rushing that. We want him to have as much time to heal as possible!
He has been more awake today than yesterday, because he is trying to cut back on pain meds, but he is still pretty groggy.
Thank you all again for your prayers and support!

Day 3 of recovery!
Please keep praying for Andrew, last night and this morning have been really rough for him. Last night he told us that he didn't feel well, and then a little while later he told us that he didn't feel like he could get a full breath (even though his oxygen level is fine..). A little while later he ended up throwing up, and a little while after that he had his second bloody nose of the day. They ran his labs and found that his hemoglobin is really low- and that would explain him feeling weird.
Today he has already thrown up once, and they are giving him a blood transfusion with 2 units of blood right now- which should help him feel much better!
Poor guy has been so out of it... And he says he feels like his head is spinning so he is nauseous all the time.
Good news that I get to report is that his chest tube is draining a lot less, so they should be able to take that out soon.
I've attached a photo of his back so you can get an idea of how big the scar will be.
Thank you again for everything.

Day 3 (part 2)
Today was a rough day- but what a huge difference the 2 units of blood made that he was given!
He finally has some color back in his cheeks, and they were able to take the chest tube out!
Please pray right now though, he has a slight fever of 100.4- we don't know why, but we are praying it is not from an infection.
Will update more as I know more. Mom and I just got home, and Dad is at the hospital with Andrew.

Recovery Day 4!
Today has definitely had its ups-and-downs! Started off with a slight fever, and when they flushed his Broviac- his fever spiked to 102.5. Thankfully we think the fever has to do with his Broviac and not his surgery- but if he continues to get fevers when they flush his broviac they might have to take it out and put a whole new one in (the whole process, surgery and everything) so we are praying that the antibiotics they are going to leave in his line will help!
His fever is down to 98.2 now! It was a rough fever, shivering and all. So we are so glad to see it break!
His newest thing is some thrush on his tongue. And the doctor will be later to check it out.
Last night was the first time he has been able to keep food down, so we have all been excited to see him eating more today too :)
Thanks for your continued prayers for all of us- we are worn out- but so thankful Andrew is feeling better today!

Day 6!
Currently Andrew is trying to annoy me so that I will get out of his bed- a good sign that he is feeling better! =)
He has walked around the floor this morning and has been keeping all his food down!
The doctor is happy with his progress- but gave us some scary news. Because of his random fevers that have to do with his Broviac-we are looking at either 12-14 days in the hospital or a new Broviac/port, and only staying 3 days. Of course Andrew wants to get a new port instead of being here for that much longer! But we haven't decided for sure yet what we will do.
Even though he is feeling a little better, he is still pretty weak and gets tired very easily.
In other news- The surgeon has decided today to start taking out every other staple in his back (he has 29 of them..) so that his back can heal. I have attached a picture of his back taken a few days ago, so you can get an idea of what he is dealing with!
Thank you again for all your prayers and support!

Day 7...
He continues to do really well recovering from his surgery- but the problem with his broviac is what is keeping him in the hospital. Last night he had a fever of 101.7, and tonight he has a slight 99.3 fever- we know that a low grade fever is normal after surgery, but he just usually happens to get these fevers when they are flushing his Broviac. This concerns the doctors greatly. Right now the doctors are talking about 3 options: 1-- 10 MORE days in the hospital on antibiotics making sure his line isn't infected, then starting chemo. 2-- starting chemo, and then putting in a new port. 3--putting in a new port and waiting to start chemo, with too much of a delay in his protocol. We are hoping for option #2! As of right now, we will be in the hospital until Sunday (at least).
The radiation oncologist is also talking about possibly starting radiation on Monday- if the pathology report is back by then, and if they find that radiation is needed.
Andrew got all 29 of his staples out today- and has been experiencing some random pains through out the day, but over all he has had a great day and has really enjoyed visits from 4 other oncology kids we have met since he was diagnosed! =)
Thanks for everything!
Love to you all.

I heard from Andrew's family today, he has now reached 16 of the 17 rounds of chemo he is supposed to have. However, scans done a couple of days ago, show a spot on his lung (that they suspect is cancer) and he is scheduled for surgery tomorrow. Please, everyone pray for his surgeons, that this mass is just scar tissue, or that there is a spontaneous healing, and for his family. They have had a very hard year.
