Wood Ducks

My MIL had a hen jump down and call her hatchlings down from a tree in their front yard. Well, when the children hit the ground their dogs proceeded to kill all but 3 of the ducklings. Now, I have them.

I went on-line last night to see what to do with them. I have them in my spare room in a tote with a wire lid and heat source. I have a shallow dish of water, some pulverized duck chow and a small sided pan with dirt and weeds I dug up from the hillside. Any more suggestions?

Yes. I dipped their beaks and I also used a 1ML syringe to kinda force some water (with a little yogurt mixed in) they swished it in their beaks and swallowed. The water has been empty a few times, they are either drinking it or spilling it. They are quite active and fluffy their feathers....good signs right? I put food in a small tupperware lid and a little on the paper. They are also nibbling the newspaper.

I would NOT use a dropper for water. When I researched feeding a baby kicked out of the nest, my findings were that most baby bird deaths were caused by that method. Apparently they get enough liquid from their food, and your water source.  Ducks like water, and I would give them a pie dish with water that they can drink out of and swim in. Yes fluffy feathers and active is a good sign.

Nic, I used a 1 ML syringe in put the smallest dab on their beak. I have heard of the eye dropped deaths too. I was told they could drowned in too much water this young. I didn't believe it but didn't want to take the chance. I will replace the lid with a pie dish...and keep it shallow. Thanks!

I couldn't find that on-line. I did see one link that said to feed them chick start but did not mention anything about the medicated type. They seem to be doing great. They really like their little patch of dirt and weeds......I saw that on-line too....what a great idea!

One of the ducks died some time in the night and one doesn't look the best. I mashed up some banana and tried feeding that. I think they sifted a little of it off my finger. I am so sad. I knew it would be tough to get these guys going. Any other suggestions would be great!
