Peafowl
« on: April 25, 2010, 12:30:47 AM »
Does anyone here have peafowl?    I'm thinking about thinking about getting some. We have chickens, but I have zero knowledge of peafowl, other than I think they are really beautiful.
Any advice or comments would be appreciated.

That's the one thing I keep hearing.  Maybe I should go and visit some to hear for myself.  That may be a deal breaker.

They are like having a 24 hour security system, they go off at perceived danger. I have a friend who has them, and the birds fly up on the roof of her house, and decorate it with feces-all over the roof and her walk ways.

I really enjoy mine. The can be noisy but, I also raise Guineas.......They do make great watch "dogs", especially Guineas (I had 5 Guineas corner a coon up against a tree and harass the #$%^ out of it!). They do tend to poop on everything, tractor seats, roofs, etc. You can "train" them to roost in trees instead of up on the roof.

I thought I wanted some but when my son got thrown from his horse because of 1 I decided didnt need any ...my horse is jumpy enough with the guinnies...I have tons of those and with my geese I have enough poop around here...  :lmao3: plus the noise is like a woman screaming...not for me...
Yep if you can go see and hear what they do before its the best way...I have learned to do this if I can. Good luck..

My horses are pretty used to the fowl. When we ride however, we have issues with wild turkeys. They wait until the horse is right over them then fly up right in front of or under the horses....its worth your life!

Right now, the Reg-Winged Black Birds are nesting. They nest in the grass and the male sits up on a tall blade to survey the area. When we ride by they fly away squaking.....scary for horses......you know those horse-eating birds are dangerous!

My training course goes along some bottom ground for a section of about 4-5 miles and I ride pretty close to a large creek. I am generally going at a pretty good clip...fast trot to gallop.  Lately there have been 2 pairs of ducks in the creek. They have almost got me dumped a number of times....the thing is they fly up out of the water and head down stream stream (the way I am going) just so they can scare my horse AGAIN!

I know what you mean as we have some geese nesting out by our back pond and it spooks me everytime I go back there and I know they are there....
