roosters
« on: March 16, 2010, 09:44:50 PM »
I have one rooster and a bunch of hens.  Well we were out cleaning the yard up and my daughter was running around and playing. I heard her scream and I look and the rooster is pecking her legs and chasing her as she ran to me. I hit him with a stick to make him stop and he did. This is the first time he has ever done that. I heard about turkeys being drawn to a certian color are roosters?

I have never heard of them being drawn to a certain color. It is more likely that he felt or felt his hens were threatend by her when she was running around playing. I hope he does not but you better watch him he will most likely try it again.

I have to add that...He would have been in the stew pot if he lived at my house! I have had roosters in the pass that will not go after adults but will go after children...but they only do it one time. It is a death sentence here! I will not take the chance of them hurting a child.

I have been posting on DH name. I told him what happen and he said well it looks like we will have chicken legs this weekend. Destinee said she wanted to shoot her rooster with her bb gun! I was surprised. She was walking by him and the hens so he probably did feel they were threatened, but he is not going to hurt my child.

How about penning the rooster? He is only doing his job, and yes it scared Destiny, but fright shouldn't take a life.

Yes you can pen him and he was doing his job but a rooster can spur a small child in the face not just scare them and that is not a chance I would take. They can be sneaky about it too. Usually if they start that kind of behavior they will do it again. I have a lot of chickens and roosters...I guess I look at it differently because I raise them for eggs and meat so we regularly butcher birds for our freezer...mean roosters go in the freezer.  Our pet chickens give us our eggs and the nice rooster's get to fertilize the eggs!  :hehe:

Another option is to re home the bird to someone that does not have children.

Well mean roosters around here dont last but long enough for me to catch them and wring their necks. We had a white crested black polish and he was a mean sucker and he got after my youngest grandson when he fell and now Aiden has 3 scars on his head before I cound get there. Nope once they do it they dont stop...sounds like its stew pot time to me. Roosters are cheap and some are mean and most arent. This is what happens here at my house.Once bitten you soup...

I don't have as much chicken experience as most of you, so I am not a good judge. I can tell you I had a RR rooster that used to attack my mom and dad, and went after my brother and sister a couple of times-he never went after me. But, they were free range chickens, and if the family carried a broom, even a small broom, the rooster left them alone. My dad finally took off his belt to defend himself from the rooster, and it wound around the roosters neck and killed him. That rooster was defending his girls and his territory, and he did a great job at that, even protecting against our Collies. Once he was gone, my hens started disappearing a couple each week until I had -0- chickens left.

Well Destinee does have a few marks on the back of her leg from him. She was running from him and as soon as she got to me he stopped when he seen my stick. Destinee is not always right there with me when we are outside. All our animals are free range. We have a perimeter fence and all animals run together, so she is sometimes out in the front pasture or sometimes in our front yard playing with goats or on her tractor. I dont think I can take a chance of me not being right there and him attack her while I am not close by. I think I can re home him. My dad only has hens so I can see if he wants him. She would not even go about her business today outside. She followed me around everywhere and when she heard him she got upset. I don't like the fact of eating him, and I would rather rehome him instead of that but if it happens again before we find him a home he is going on the grill!

I agree with Mitzi.....in the pot! They cannot be trained out of this behavior. The more you punish (hit with broom, pour 5 gal bucket of water on them) the more they attack.

Roosters usually do a great job of protecting their ladies but there are nice roosters who defend their flock without hurting or scaring children. They can cause a lot of damage especially to little children. There is certainly nothing wrong with eating chicken! I have heard that mean roosters taste better than anything!

Yep them mean roosters do taste good!  :hehe:

Fresh chicken is like fresh eggs...there is no comparing it to the grocery store chicken and eggs. Fresh chicken has so much more flavor, is juicy, and not all that yucky fat. It is soooo good!

When we first went to Houston to see the doctors when my husbands cancer returned, we were staying at a hotel and we received a free buffet breakfast each day. When my husband took the lid off the eggs, he looked down at the eggs and turned to me and whispered, "Something is wrong with the eggs."  :lmao3:
We are so spoiled for fresh eggs!

:lmao3: Well he has gone to his new home. She was terrified everytime we went outside and I did not want an animal that was bound to hurt her again and that she was scared of. So he found a new home and what he does with him I don't want to know. It was so funny when the guy came to get him, Destinee asked " Are you gonna eat my rooster?" LOL He thought that was so cute. He told her no he is going to go be with some more hens. She then asked, "Is he gonna have some girlfriends?" I thought it was so cute!!

Glad to hear you found him a new home!

I have been steadily down sizing my flock and 10 hens and 1 rooster went to a new home today. Saturday morning I have another 15 hens going. It has been so hard to pick who goes and who stays. :icon_sad:

I am glad you found him a new home! That's great. I actually lucked out when I sold my roosters that were also going to a home where they could have a new flock of ladies. The man who bought them had no kids so it was a good deal.
