Pet Chickes woes
« on: March 05, 2010, 04:02:13 PM »
2 Days ago I found my favorite and smallest and oldest chicken all bloody in the face area
lucky she is tame and I caught her and washed off as best as I could her face and crest
there was so much blood I couldnt find where it was comming from, so I covered her in quick-stop .
Next morning more blood , cleaned her better and figured it was her crest,
looks like something chomped it or she caught it on something,
cleaned again and covered up with QS again
that night it had slowed enough to clean really good and I found the trama spot
removed all loose flesh and applied QS and pressure this time to the direct spot
SOOOOO happy to report no fresh blood this morning !!!!!
I was going to rub neosporin on it today or do you think I should leave it alone ?

I have chickens, but so far no injuries, so I am not talking from experience, but I would probably go ahead and use the neosporin.  It can't hurt. But from what I've read on the BackYardChicken web site, make sure it does not contain any pain relief. They say it is not good for chickens. Again, this is not from experience, just reading on the web.

I love pine tar. I am afraid she will or others will peck the neosporin off. I use pine tar for everything!  Just wear gloves when you apply it. It covers the area and allows it to heal so the manure, bacteria, etc. can't get in. It eventually wears off and good as new. Not sure how it would work on chickens...but worth a try?

I never heard of pine tar
I'll look at TSC
I always use the Neo w/ pain reliever( our left overs)
I wonder what would be wrong with that for chickens ?
I use it on every animal here
the other chickens dont like the feel of the neo
ointment on thier beaks and leave it alone
I was afraid it might soften up the quick stop and start bleeding again.

Nothing is wrong with neo. I use it too for a lot of stuff. It wouldn't hurt the chickens and if they leave it alone GREAT! Pine tar will not soften and stays in place a long time to allow things to heal. The chickens shouldn't be able to peek it off.

Neo is fine. It is the pain reliever in some types that can cause death. Chickens cannot tolerate the numbing agent. Hope she gets well soon.

thanks
she is definitely feeling better
she thinks she is the queen around here
and I think that maybe one of the Buff Orps
told her she wasn't.
I had a chicken attacked by a weasel and I used neo w/ pain rel ( the only kind I buy)
on her bite wounds and she healed up fine.
I will try to find some time to do some research on this
things that make you go hmmmmmmmmm........ :hehe:

  Glad she's better!

I had a buff O. that thought she was Queen...but she was right. She lived out the last months of her life in the house. She was about 12 years old, with a bum leg....when she passed over the Rainbow Bridge this winter. She was my very first chicken.

Heidi.....I miss you!

I know when 1 of mine gets bloody or bleeding the others will peck it...I would put her in a cage till she is all healed Debi, as the culprit might be another chicken pecking her. They will pick the area because of the blood. Neo will work but I would still put her in a smaller cage inside the coop where nothing can get to her till healed up. I would do this at night when they pick on each other for roost spots. Glad she is doing better.

Oh, I know Debi! When I lived in New Mexico...I had a terrible blood clot and was hospitalized. Long story! Anyway...It snowed about 3 feet one day and a tree fell into my chicken yard. Well, what I think was a mountain lion or bobcat got in and killed all my chickens except one.....Heidi! She was a very traveled chicken! I miss her everyday...but she had a fabulous life! And brought so much joy to mine!

Debi...I am so glad she's better!

Kathy...I have "Hospital cages" in my basement, all with heat and nesting crates for my sick and injured chickens.
