Three-legged cats
« on: January 24, 2010, 12:58:05 AM »
Back in 2005 our cat, Nathan, was shot with a 22 and had to have his left front leg amputated. Yesterday we were out of town for our daughter's wedding and didn't get back until midnight. Our outside cat, Tony Tucker, came hobbling up and we saw that he had a broken leg. This morning we took him to the vet and the x-ray showed a shattered shoulder joint from a shot gun. So now he has to have his right front leg amputated. Weird, huh? And sad.

Very weird, sure hope Tony comes through it well, and I'd be looking at your neighbors real hard.

Things like this happen everywhere...yep like Nic said you might want to watch the neighbors... a cat is small and not the size of a deer or other animal...makes you wonder dont it???Hope he does well and is up and moving soon even if its on 3 legs. I have a 3 legged goat.

We do have some pretty trigger-happy neighbors. And cats seem to be despised. Over the five years we have been here we have had five cats disappear plus one that was found partially decapitated in our front yard. I have a back yard for my other three-legged cat that he is safe in but my other three can climb the fence.

Unfortunately, some ignorant people don't understand cats can and do go where they choose, that is why you can't have a leash law for a cat. And unless your cat is going after their livestock, they are NOT allowed to shoot, or otherwise harm the cat. You might head to your local Humane Society/Animal Control and ask for a copy of the law in this matter and distribute it to your neighbors, maybe they just don't know any better and killing excites them. I'd like to see it excite them all the way to jail.

"I'd like to see it excite them all the way to jail." Amen to that!
I didn't know that about the law, though. It was my understanding that if your animals don't stay on your property then you are just out of luck as to what happens to them.

Call your local Humane Society/Animal Control, in most parts of the Country, you can't kill someone elses property unless that property(in this case the cat) is threatening your livestock.

I will never understand how folks can do something like this.....And I will say right now that I'm not a cat lover.

Years ago I had an issue with a neighbor's male cat that was spraying all over my kids yard toys....and it stinks, no doubt about it.  I ended up catching the cat and taking him to our shelter....But I would never cause harm to a cat.

Yes, male cat urine does stink for sure! Even on the neutered guys. Tony is scheduled for his surgery on Friday. Poor thing! He is a great mouser, stays outside mostly, and doesn't like being cooped up. I just can't believe both my male cats are/will be amputees! Breaks my heart and now I am keeping my little female in also. They do such a great job killing varmints but I don't want to risk more injury.

It is bizarre that you now have 2 cats with 3 legs
congrats on saving and caring for them  :hug2_202:
I  have some understanding of why people shoot cats but don't like it
cat urine stinks badly and hard to make go away
and some people just collect cats like potato chips

Cat lover here but I do understand not wanting cats around. Out here the cat population is out of control. People keep cats around to mouse but then they do not have them fixed and before you know it you have hundreds of cats running around and no way to stop the growth and people end up with unwanted cats. Well I would not go to the extreme of shooting them but have had to have them removed from the trailer court on a regular basis. They can carry disease and such. We take the healthy ones out to our farm and ranch neighbors and the sick ones to the vet to be put down. But to just shoot a cat  :bang:

"and some people just collect cats like potato chips"
So true! there is a family down the street that has two mobile homes just for their cats to live in.
They do multiply amazingly fast and can carry disease but it's sad that people shoot them "just because"

The lady down the street with two mobile homes for her cat-that is unsanitary. We have a lady who lives across the street from our trailer court, her acre is loaded in junk, which is a perfect breeding ground for ferral cats.
People shooting at and harming animals just for fun are sick in the head.
Collecting cats like potato chips-well we know what that is like with goats. I had to down size my herd last fall.  :hehe:

Well, an update on Tony: My husband and I were really worried that it would be a crazy house around here after Tony's surgery because my other three-legged cat, Nathan, is soo mean to him. We talked to the vet and they found him a foster home for after his surgery. We are sad and miss him but feel like it is for the best. Apparently his new mom has another three-legged cat also, but she is a sweet kitty, not like Nathan. After this I said "NO MORE CATS"  It is just too sad for them around here.

After Tony left, that left us with three cats. Now another has been shot. I just let her out to potty in the day-time. She didn't come back right away and we couldn't find her all afternoon. When we finally found her she had several holes from some kind of shot gun. Not a serious injury, but ugh! So it has to be one of our close neighbors. I am thinking of finding new homes for my two calicos. Anyone want to give a safe home to a spayed calico? :bang:
