Need help with duck eggs!
« on: November 18, 2009, 04:20:35 AM »
Hey,so I know I haven't been on here in forever but I really need some help.
Last night two of my six ducks got attacked. We are pretty sure the guy next door's dog or outside cat got them, cause we've had them outside all summer and nothing got them, then last night two disappeared and there was a trail of feathers leading across the street :gaah: and this wouldn't be the first time his animals have gotten our livestock.

Anyways,
So the one female had a nest of eggs which we are sure were fertilized, because when they kicked out the bad eggs from the nest we saw blood in them.  So this morning I went out and brought them in,put them with a heat lamp, warm towel, sometimes heating pad (but not right on the eggs) to keep them warm till we went into town and got an Incubator a little while later. So we got home, and I set them all up in there and they have been doing good so far.
I know there is a good chance they won't make it,since they went a few chill hours without the mommy being on top of them to keep them warm..But,I looked up online and a few people have had eggs make it even though they went without the mom for a little while,so i thought it was worth a try.. it would seem so heartless to not even try.
I really want to candle them to see how they are doing, but I'm going to wait till tomorrow to do that since its late.
My question is:
If you see dark splotches from the outside, that means it is dead, right?
two or three have those darker splotches..I wasn't sure if they were just different cause they were older,or cause they are bad.
I wasn't sure if that was just you seeing them grow inside or not,I doubt that.
But then I looked at our other duck's nest, and all her eggs are darker, but she is a brown duck,so that could make sense.
I just want to make sure before I toss the dark ones,I tried looking it up online but didn't get very far so I'm hoping some of you may know.
Also,I was wondering... Will I see any of the inside from the outside of the egg without the candling?

Thanks!
kate

I don't know anything about this, but hopefully someone will be on here soon that can answer your questions.

Only on a really rotten egg...which would also smell bad.

You'll have to candle them.  Depending on how far along they are, you SHOULD be able to tell good/bad. A good egg with either have veins with a noticeable heart or if the duckling is more developed you'll see a cleanly defined air cell, and solid 'baby' in the other end.

Even though they've chilled, they should still hatch, altho you won't have as good a hatch rate and they'll hatch a day or two late.  Be sure to keep your humidity higher.

Sorry about your attack!

Hey,

Thanks helmstead all that information really helped!
Well, this morning I woke up,I had a feeling id probably find out for sure those eggs were bad this morning, and I did. haha. smelly!
so i tossed those three,(only one leaked). Then I cleaned up the Incubator and let it air out some, and kept the other eggs warm for awhile.

Then I waited till my dad got home tonight to candle them. I didn't realize he'd leave so early or else I would have gotten his flashlight out last night...
but just before dark today,I decided to go out and get our little brown duck's eggs in.. because since the two ducks disappeared she has seemed to abandon her eggs, maybe something that got the other two scared her away from them. They were getting a chill,so I know for sure she hasn't been on them, and shes been in the front yard all day. So first i candled the little brown duck's eggs. omg,it was sooo cool! I saw little veins, and i think the heart.. a small dark redish spot? then I looked at some of the older ones, and I saw veins and a little body in them!! it was really cool,I've never done that with eggs before. So then,I went to the larger Perkin(?) duck's eggs and I tried them.. but i didn't see any, some were just dark (they were going bad) and one was just yellow.. so there wasn't any babies in those.. Outta curiosity,I went to the fridge and I looked at one of the eggs we bought from the store, and it looked just like the yellow one that I saw. so I guess either this batch of hers weren't fertilized or the ones we saw that were kicked out of the nest were one of the other duck's.

Anyways,I talk way too much, lol! so I guess ill shut up.
Ill make sure to post pictures if they hatch in a few weeks!
