What to do ?

DH went to the coop today and found "a yolk"....just a yolk.

What do you all do if you have a chicken eating the shell?

Or, is it possible the chicken didnt lay the shell...just the yolk?

Nancygoat used to use plastic Easter eggs that had gravel in the, and they were super glued shut, in the nest boxes. Apparently, if they are pecking the plastic they kind of unlearn the behavior. I've never heard of the chicken eating part of the egg and not the whole thing/inside.

That's a good idea Nic...I'll give it a try. 

It's funny...we raised these 10 RIR's up from chicks and they just started laying about a month ago.  Of course, as is normal, they laid 1 egg, then 2 eggs, etc....  The most we got in one day was 7 eggs, but now their production has dropped to 5 a day....Not sure what to make of it.  Maybe I just have one that keeps eating the eggs? 

I guess I have to be more diligent and check the nests more frequently through out the day.
