First Attempt at Breeding my Californians
« on: July 16, 2009, 05:44:53 PM »
 :lmao3:

Okay, so I put my doe in with my larger buck today for about 30 mins.  HILARIOUS.  Have ta say.

I never saw her lift her rump for him, but there was one time that he was doing his thing while they were facing me so I couldn't see the nec. actions.  On that attempt, he flipped forward, fell to the floor, and proceeded to twitch and thump for a couple minutes afterward.

I put her back in her cage about 15 mins after this as he attempted a few more times with no rump lifting, then they both went to separate corners and rested.

I am thinking I'll put her back tonight - yes or no?  Is there any way for me to know if that breeding was a good one other than to wait a month for kits?

If he fell off and twitched and stomped after "attempting", that means that she was bred. ( I find it funny every time,..just cracks me up, they are just too cute not to laugh)
I generally try to have him do his business 2-3 more times during that first phase/meeting. If I only get 1 mating out of the first time or if I want to be sure she is bred for sure, I go back 10-12 hours and let him do his business again. You can go back tonight and have them mate again, but that would be the last time.
They ovulate 10 hours after a mating.
A lot of people just let them do their thing 1 time. I personally find that it is better to do it this way. Some does will stand for a mating and will not ovulate. The odds of multiples have not increased for the multiple matings. You don't want to breed them any further though than that second mating at 10-12 hours later. Rabbits have 2 horns,...so with rabbits it is possible for her to have 2 different due dates,..
Some people palpitate, I find 30 days a short time, so I just set them up in their "momma" cage 3-5 days before they are due and see if she delivers.
From my experience, if you get 3-5 matings, chances are, she is pregnant unless the situation was extremely forced....
What are you outside temps right now? If it's pretty warm, the buck could be a little less fertile.....

Nifty!  I'll give her one more go this evening and we'll see if we get anything in a month =)

Well I put her in with the same buck this evening and he went on for about 20 minutes, unable to get the job done...so I put her in with the 'extra' buck thinking he would be fresh, LOL.  Worked like a charm, he was much better in his technique.  haha  I think we have some buns in the oven!

 I'm assuming you do not care who the sire is because you are doing meat?

If the 1st buck that bred her this morning is not interested this evening, she may not be either,... They can "accidentally" get it done once, but she has to be interested in the "affair" to really ovulate...in these cases, I usually get 50% chance...
I would be tempted to take her to the 2nd buck again 30 min. later tonight just to be sure. If she will lift up easily for him again, I'd say your on the $$.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for babies!!!

'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.' - Theodore Roosevelt 1907

Ah, well...the good news is it's not long to wait before you figure out it didn't work and get to try again!
