Salt and Pepper
« on: April 24, 2009, 08:35:15 PM »
I picked up my 2 new laying hens yesterday. They are VERY sweet and friendly. They are barred as their names imply. They are a cross between a barred rock and americauna, so they have the 'tuffs' around their faces. Their eggs are a little more blue than green.
I'll try to get a picture tonight.

'In the first place, we should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace, or origin. But this is predicated upon the person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language. And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.' - Theodore Roosevelt 1907

These new hens are almost too friendly. I had to take the rooster out today to give them a rest.
They are just scared to death in there. I went in to check for eggs and they ran to hide under my legs. :hug2_202:   :bawling: I had to tell them it will be alright!!! They really like people. Breaks me heart.
They will have to get used to him though. I have decided I want to try to see if I can let them all have a bigger sized pasture area(no top, I'd have to lock them in at night), but the rooster will have to be the one to "keep them in check". Without him, they may try to fly off.
They are just so scared, they won't come out for me to take pics!! We'll have to put them on a our grooming table tonight to get the pics.
Kate, these may also have 25% New Hampshire now that I think about it. They came out of the litters that the black americauna crosses I have came out of. If that is so, they are 50% Americauna, 25% barred rock and 25% new hampshire. Let me know if these look like your friends.

Here they are!
I found out, Salt is the trouble maker of the 2. She spent her time looking for the quickest way UP and out!!
So I went ahead and clipped her wings, just in case I let them out to pasture.

Thanks.
Debi, I clipped just the one wing on her and she can still fly up 4 ft.,....which makes me a little nervous.... Everything I read says just the one wing....
Way back when I had leghorns, after clipping one wing, the boogers still could get out of an 8 ft tall fence!! I kept those in by the skin of my teeth.
These americauna crosses have that flighty attitude and body style. I think I'll let the rooster work on them a bit before I try to let them out!!  :hehe:
I'd hate for one to get out on the road...... I may try it for short periods and if they are bad, I'll just extend the covered coop.

I love the fluffy faces; I have Americanas--I might try that mix.  They are so cute.
