Baby Bunnies
« on: April 02, 2009, 06:23:17 PM »
My best friends rabbits all had babies,
she has mini lops and french lops,
she is trying to get me to take one.
I don't really need one but they are soooooo adorable.

Are rabbits like goats ? lonley if alone ?

Her one bunny is sick and she took it to the vet,
it has the suffles and the buns ( rabbits even have cute named sicknesses)
is this usuall, do bunnies get sick alot ?

Any advice pro and con would be appriciated, thanks

Debi,
No, rabbits don't get lonely. They have all sorts of fun by themselves!! With a human to have, they really thrive alone.
No, rabbits don't really get sick unless you have a pretty intense setup. Just like goats, if you have several and are breeding, you will always have something come up, but generally speaking, rabbits are much less likely to get sick opposed to goats.
If the bunny has snuffles, that is a contagious bacteria like pneumonia that you really don't want to have if you are going to have breeding stock. The problem with snuffles is that it almost never is cured and generally always gets passed around to every single bunny,...meaning,..a problem with the herd that you can not cure.
If this would be a pet, it may be fine and some rabbits are just carriers, and do not have outward symptoms for a period of time. There are ways to treat rabbits, and with a good dose of med., a rabbit may stay asymptomatic for years.
As far as "buns", I have never heard of that, but I assume diarrhea is meant by that?
No, my rabbits don't get diarrhea. It's not common at all. It could be a sign of way too much hay,too much feed, or cocci, worms, or even entro(yes, rabbits get entro).
With this bun having snuffles and the poops, that tells me she's not in good health at all. I would be cautions.
If you are just getting one for a pet, I don't think any harm or foul is at stake. If it lives a great life without sickness, you're good to go.
Now, if you were planning to get more, or start a little herd, I wouldn't get one. Snuffles is something you don't want to start your herd with.
Bunnies are addicting!!! I have more rabbits than goats now! LOL!!

thanks,
i was only thinking of 1 bunny.
i have no desire to breed or have more.
She did take the bunny to the vet and he gave her antibiotics for her snuffles.
he told her she would be fine.
yes the vet told her the buns was diareaha
and it came from her feeding a bunch of different veggies she was getting for free from work.

any opinions between mini or the french ?

Ahh, yes, feeding the veggies definitely will cause the poo's.
Yes, snuffles can be treated into remission with many.

Sounds like you're getting a bunny!!  :hehe:
I have not been around French Lops much, I think they are somewhat rare, but Mini Lops are a few pounds heavier than my Holland Lops, and are VERY popular with open and youth. They are pretty docile. If I'm not mistaken, the French Lops get much bigger? To me, I would pick the breed that ate/pooed/peed less,....LOL!!!
We also have the Netherland Dwarfs, which only get to 2 lbs. They are very easy to clean up after and feed.

Still not sure, as I would have to build some outside housing for 1 bunny
and yes her french lops are very big,
the male is also very sweet likes to be held.
I am leaning towards the smaller ones though .
less mess sounds like heaven

If I remember correctly from my rabbit show days (many, many years ago) French lops are about the same size as New Zealand whites.  I agree, although I haven't had rabbits in a long time, I would go with the smaller one if it is just for a pet.

At our last rabbit show, I remember seeing a very large rabbit being held by his handler, and if I am not mistaken it was a french Lop! We were all commenting how sweet that big bunny looked; he was just so limp in his handlers arms. It had to have been 12-15 lbs!! Very tame rabbit!! You could tell that person loved that rabbit and handled it frequently.
