Breed Question
« on: March 13, 2009, 06:02:57 PM »
Out of five hens that are supposed to be Dominiques, two have straight combs. They are mostly black with white patches, not bars. Could they be something else or maybe just a mixed breed? Not important really, just curious. And why do my Buff Orps lay such light eggs? The other ones I had laid large rosy brown eggs. These are still a pink tone but much lighter. Like I said, just curious...

Can you post a picture?
From what  I have noticed, when hens first start laying eggs, the eggs will be  smaller and the egg color is lighter. As they mature, the eggs do get larger and the color deepens.

I didn't know that about the eggs color. Thanks.

You're welcome. Yes, I know the camera issues too well. My batteries are usually dead when I go to use it! LOL!!
