Babies?-More Pictures
« on: February 20, 2009, 09:27:52 PM »
This seems to happen every year! In order for us to have JR. kits(under 6 months old) to show during the summer, I have to breed early. Which means I run the risk of those babies coming out as Popsicles.
So, I have one due this Sunday and to my great luck(not), it will be very cold. So momma rabbit is down in my basement. This rabbit has not had a successful litter for me as of yet(bought last summer), so I used my sons buck Blackie to see if a change in buck would result in some viable offspring. So my son is excited to see kits from his buck and I'm curious to see if we can get some live babies out of this doe!! She's more of a show doe, and for show does, it is harder to get them to be good mothers. She has NO excuse this time! Warm and happy down in my basement. :bio:

She's adjusting just fine.  :lmao3: Little brat!!
She's good for having the kits on the wire. This time around, even IF she has them on the wire, I can place them in the box without worrying about exposure.
She's getting smart, the other day I caught her building her nest around the outside of her box. She did figure out what happened the last 2 times. Silly thing.

Patsy delivered! 3 kits. One feels a little small and all felt a little cool to he touch, but all were in the box this morning. She didn't pull a lot of hair.
I plan to hold momma down in a little bit to get the kits to get a good belly full just to make sure she fed them.
I think a few may be black, my son will be excited!!

Yes, by the cool feel of the kits, they would have been dead if she had them outside!!! Bringing them in made the difference!!
When I bought her, the lady said she has had successful kits in the past, but I'm not too sure of that. I'll find out if she fed them in a bit. I have this feeling she hasn't fed them, otherwise they would have been warmer. It's around 65 in my basement.

Is that warm enough for rabbits, or do you need a heat lamp? I know NOTHING about rabbits, guess you already know that.

It's about 32 outside. With that temp., all that is needed is a 60 wt bulb above the box. With the pulled hair, they shouldn't even need that.
65 is ideal. Rabbits do better in cooler temps. At 80 or more outside temp, the kits would suffer. Patsy pulled enough hair for 75 degrees, she's a bit off in her judgment.

 Well, as protective as I am, I brought them upstairs at noon and warmed them up a bit in an easter basket with a heat pad. She didn't feed them and because of that, they were too cool for my liking, I didn't want to risk loosing them.

This evening the 2 normal sized kits ate their little hearts out for me.  :LaughOhStop: The little black one wasn't meant to be, these typically die shortly after birth, he was really small.

I'm thinking they may be broken with black. I will try to get pics tomorrow, they don't look like much Kate!!

Just an update.
Yesterday I pulled more fur and put the babies back in with the mom. She looked so pitiful yesterday morning, she kept sitting in her box waiting for her kits to nurse even though they we're in there.
I fed them last night and they ate like they were starved.
I fed this morning and their little bellies were already full, she's feeding them.

I'll get a picture, they are cute, even if they don't look like much!! :hehe:
Luckily, she quit growling at me, boy was she mad about me taking those kits out and forcing her to feed!! As mad as she was, she didn't try to bite me, but I knew she really wanted too!! :lmao3:
This morning, she didn't growl when I went to get her, she was happy to have them back.

When the mom makes her nest, she pulls the fur from her dewlap(extension on the neck below the lower jaw that protrudes out), if she has one and then the fur from around her nipples to make the nipples easy to find and to insulate the nest for the kits. They are born without fur and their eyes are closed, so they are really helpless.
Every doe builds a different nest. Some like more hay/straw/newspaper and some just want it to be fur.
In the warmer months, they generally will not pull too much fur because the kits can over heat. In the winter if it's very cold, they will build a very big nest of fur.
My little Netherland dwarf doe pulled almost every bit of hair out of her body for her first nest right in the middle of summer, she was almost naked. Most does won't pull that much, but this little thing was on a mission. She's just 2 pounds, so she about looked like a naked rat.
Patsy didn't pull but a small amount of fur for her kits, so I went ahead and pulled around the nipples. Some does will pull more fur a few hours to a few days after birth, so I was hoping she would do that, but she didn't and still hasn't. She did take a piece of paper and laid it on top of where the kits sleep yesterday. :lmao3:
She's trying, but not perfect yet. I think once she raises this litter, she will be a great mom next time, she just has to learn as she goes along.

I had rabbits when I was a kid, lots of them.  And we had some for show and some we sold for butcher.  Part of the rabbits getting ready for birth includes the need to pull the hair for the nest.  The hair gets a little loose for this and since it is a natural thing for them to do, it doesn't bother them too much.  My personal experience with the mothers was if they weren't good mothers the first time they never are.  Our biggest problem was if the babies were born on the wire and not in the box, that mother never had them in the box later either.  I forgot how cute the little buggers are at this age, my husband is in the living room wondering if I going to say I want rabbits now.  Maybe in the future if there was a place to raise them.

Penny, I have heard about bad mothers and how if they don't do it right the first time, they never will.
I think this does partially hold true if you just let the doe do things naturally. Most people go by the 3 time rule.
I have found though that by working with the does, they can learn to be good moms. I make sure all of my first time moms allow the kits to nurse. I hold the dam on my lap and let the kits nurse 2 times a day for as long as I have to. Once the milk flows real well and she gets over the feeling of the nursing, the mom generally wants to release the milk, so she will feed them herself.

Oh I definitely agree with being able to make a good mother out of a bad one, my husband has done it with cows.  But when I had rabbits, I was a teenager and we had almost 100 of them.  We all know that sometimes teenagers may not be as diligent in making sure the best thing happens as an adult might be.  I had to get up at 4:30 every morning to chore the rabbits in addition to milking a cow and feeding whatever else we may have had at the time, then catch the shcool bus at 7:30.  Back then I don't think I would have had the foresight to make the mother nurse her babies and with so many, certainly not the time.  I would like to have rabbits, but maybe only 2 or 3 does and a buck to raise them to eat.  I hope you have continued good luck with the ones you have left.

Thanks Penny for the well wishes!
Yes, with 100 rabbits, NO, you can't possibly hold every mom down, just not practical. With larger commercial operations, the moms must be perfect in their abilities to keep the production numbers up with less work for the producer. Guess those does that do not cooperate end up at the butcher!!
I just have a small herd of the fancies, so I can take the time to make sure things go the way I want with a little help for me! :hehe: I'm not really looking for the numbers and ease most want for commercial, I'm looking for the highest survival rate out of each doe. I push fate.
With having goats for all of these years, I've been back-grounded more with the practice of specific attention to each animal.

Yep, sounds like you have rabbit fever!! :whoohoo: Let us know if you get some!! :hehe:
