looking for a breed
« on: December 16, 2008, 04:51:50 PM »
My daughter is doing a sheep project for 4-H. Last year she did a sheepless sheep project but this year she is in need of sheep. We are kind of looking into a dual purpose meat/wool sheep. She wants to do a breeding project next year. We were looking into Soay, Taraghee, or I have the opertunity to get shetland. Does anyone one have any suggestions on type of shep we should get?

I like the American Barbados or the Barbados Blackbelly - super parasite resistant with spiffy colors. I also like the Scottish Blackface heritage breed...

Have you looked into the minature ones that come in many colors? I can't remember the name off bat, but they are for meat/wool/milk and are just adorable. My boss used to have lincolns and a few other breeds and by far, these are his favorates for handling. I'll have to find the name of them and post back when I do.

Supposedly there are miniature/small Finnish sheep (though I haven't found evidence of that online) and they were tiny and awesome. IDK if they were a Finnish cross or what, but they were fun to hang out with.

These are called Icelandic sheep. They are a true pure breed. Here's a picture of one. I think most come in solid, but this one is really cute!!

They are supposed to. If you look them up on the web, you will find all the info on them. I researched them when he was getting ready to buy them and I remember that they are marketed as duel use.

Thanks, I will look into them. I have a friend who wants to buy the wool. She cleans and spins the wool then turns it into material.
