Chickens, Pictures added!
« on: August 13, 2008, 01:34:24 AM »
We have 8 RIRs, 7 hens and a rooster. They're almost old enough to start laying. We also have 4 guineas, same age. I don't guess they'll lay till next year? Well I was on the hunt to locate a couple cochin bantam hens to set eggs for me but no one has any! Short of ordering I won't have cochins. I have ordered chicks before so I may do that again but I just didn't want to get so many right now. I was really hoping to find a pair or trio already laying or that would be soon to save on brooding.

So this past weekend we went to look at some chickens. I was under the impression from hubby who'd talked to the guy that they had cochins. When we got there he said he only had one rooster. Well that's no good so we looked at what else he had. He had many Silkies but they were young and it was too hard to be sure on sexes. I didn't want to take a gamble so I looked at what else he had. I ended up spotting his last pair of Silver Sebrights left and brought them home with me. I love Silvers. She's not quite laying yet, but will be after molting. I can't wait to see her laying. I managed to get a gold sebright to set eggs for me last year. She hatched off all the eggs I'd collected from her until she started setting. I was thrilled! So I will try that after this little Silver gets to laying. I may give in and buy an incubator again. Oh no! The bug is biting again! I might be overrun with eggs again soon! Haha

I had a LOT of chickens at one time planning to raise lots of them. But we sold out and only kept layers. I don't want to have so many again, just a few select breeds and one being a layer breed. The rest bantams.

Yes, my little bantees were my favorites!! Those little eggs worked just fine!! I think if I ever got any chickens again, it would be a few of the bantams.

I looked online and saw where the roosters weighed 26 ounces and the hens weigh 4 ounces less.  They are flashy little chickens.

I hate RIR roos , every one I have ever had has been a nasty one. Although they are very handsome to look at.
i had a golden seabrite roo he was gorgeous , but his name fit his personality " a**hole "
the kids would all giggle when I said his name.
I will try to find a picture.

I had RIRs when I was young, and the roo was mean to everyone except me. He used to chase the horse, the pig, spur the heifers, and of course go after the whole family. He met his demise the last time he attacked my dad, and I cried for days.

Only aggressive roosters I've had was Old English bantam and Ameraucanas. The Ameraucanas were crossed with game birds. The OE nearly got my eye. I should have rung his neck but instead I got rid of him and his hens.

I've had a lot of other bantam roosters and so far most have been pretty good. The RIR roosters that we raised have been really subdued. We had bought a strait run group of 15 and had a few other roosters. We just let them free range. They'd run to us when we went outside and follow us around the barnyard. Not aggressive at all. They were still young though.

Nice chickens! I really like the way the sebrights look.
A lady (long time poultry breeder) told me that there are 2 kinds of RIR. One is like what you've got and the other is old-timey, a very dark red, almost black and that those old time kind are very docile even the roos.

Well I can tell by looking at the rooster he's not purebred. So I'll use him and the hen to breed some mutts around the barnyard for pest control. Why not right? He has hackle feathering and saddle feathering and he should be completely hen feathered. So oh well they're still very pretty.
