Alpacas as guard animals?
« on: January 06, 2008, 02:53:10 PM »
Hi yall,
I'm new to your site. I raise Alpacas & Boer goats and have 2 guard Llamas.
It has been my experience that Alpacas make terrable guard animals! That is why we have two Llamas.
If a coyote gets into our pastures the Alpacas;
1) run away
if that doesn't work they
2) turn and spit
If that doesn't work they
3) Lay down and say eat me.

Llamas are the way to go!
If something is outside the fence that doesn't belong there they round up the alpacas and put them into the barn and stand by the entrance.
if whatever it is gets into the pasture they will run it down and kill it!

Just to let you know my experience

Just saw this post. Yep I agree with you. I have a llama and she is a great herd protector!! With a wonderful personality to go with it. I will always have one. Last breeding season. Our Nig Gwarf Carla Decided to have her doeling in the barn with the rest of the goats.  :icon_eek: Carla and doeling were in the barn and Morgan my llama would not leave her side. And when we moved Carla and the baby to a birthing stall she stood in the doorway of that barn and watched.  :icon_biggrin:

They'll guard/protect the flock, regardless of species???  I like llamas.
