American Black belly (HELP)
« on: October 18, 2007, 09:22:41 PM »
About 3 mths. ago I did something really stupid. I bought a little sheep from some farmer and his wife on the side of the road. I was told that it was easy to care for and so of course it was sooo cute I brought him home. Now he is 5 mths. old and getting "bucky" He is starting to grow horns and is still intact. Is it too late to nueture/castrate him? I am actually getting scared of him and have had a hard time trying to re-home him. If I can castrate him now will it stop his behavior? I looked up pictures on the internet and that's how I know what kind of sheep he is. Any help Please!!!!

No it is not too late to castrate. If he was here I would band him asap. Once his testicles drop off his attitude should get better.

Thank you sooooo much. I really do love the little guy but I am getting scared for me and
the kids. I will band him very soon.

Have you banded before? I would also have those horns removed post haste, if you wait much longer it will be too late.

AND make sure the band is as close to the testes as possible. Many animals loose their lives each year because people band to near the belly.

I have never banded before but my dad has and i'm sure he can walk me through it. He llives a ways a way but he will help. How would I remove his horns? Would a vet have to do it , they are getting big about 4 inches long?

You can do it, have the vet do it, or call around to the goat breeders in your area. One of them should be able to show you how it is done, then next time (you know when another sweetie needs you,) you can do it yourself.

I was under the impresion that once they started growing they had to be removed surgically. I am also a little upset that a person would just send an animal off with someone and give little or no information about the animal. I know it's buyer beware and my responsability to know how to care for an animal I get. But they really must not have cared about him all that much to send him off. The lady just said " he's a sheep " Didn't even sat what kind. I found pics. and description on the internet. It's kinda sad and everytime I look at him I feel so bad. I hope he will be happy here and that he Will calm down enough for us to be able to be around him. Right now he will be fine and sweet for a few min. and then he's running us all down.

If the horn is small enough to fit in the dibudding iron, it can generally be done, but you have to hurry, the longer the horns are there, the more their bloody supply develops, and then yes, it becomes a surgical issue. His behavior sounds like that of a maturing ram, they can be quite aggressive, especially if they are in rut.

I am so hoping that the castration calms him down. I really want to keep him but like I said am concerned about his buckieness. I talked to the live person chat at jeffers and thay said it is too late to dehorn him and has to be done by vet. I am betting that costs a pretty penny.

There is a different option but its more painful and does take some time...you can take the little green elastacator bands and place them on his horns and it is quite painful from what I have heard and it does take some time. Some do this when they buy a goat or sheep that has them. I havent done it persoally but have heard of it.  Also when he is neutered he will calm down alot and the horns should slow down growing also...most sheep dont have horns, maybe its just this type of sheep...People dont care as long as they can sell the critter or just give it away. I have seen it happen alot and thats just part of life some CARE and some DONT...
Hang in there he will calm down and stip stinking soon after you get him done. It will make a big change in his life.

your vet is right if the horns are already 4 in long then you can't disbud  you would have to have surgical removal or band.  If you have an ag vet school nearby they do it as a class for very resonable.   Ours it is $90
