We have babies !!

 :newclap: Well, this was surprising!  Even more surprising they are still alive!  They were born Saturday!  They change so fast!  Thumper had her first litter in the fall and that was a disaster.  She didn't know what to do.  This time she was a pro!  I could not believe how much fur she pulled.  She has been a wonderful Mommy!!  I really second guessed her.  I wanted her to act like a momma hen.  I wanted her to stay in the nest with the little ones.  Guess what...She hardly ever goes in there and they are doing fine.  There are 8 little bunnies.  She peeks in the nest often but mostly leaves them alone.  We put a light in the top of  the little nest box because it is pretty cold.  We didn't want to move her whole nest indoors because we were afraid it would upset her.  She had everything set the way she wanted it.  Everyone always says that you can't touch the babies or they will die. 
Question:  When can we hold the little ones?

Congratulations on your new arrivals!! I think Sondra said you shouldn't touch them until they have fur, but I'm not sure.

I handle my babies immediatly.   Also rabbits according to goats and humans are very bad mothers.  Rabbits only tend to the babies when they need fed otherwise they leave them alone.  That is why you don't gather up wild bunnies unless you know for sure the mom is dead.  does stay away from their nest in the wild so preditors don't know where to find it.  Your  babies will be getting thier fur in the next few days so then you shouldn't need a light on them but it probably won't hurt if they get too hot they will be on top the fur and not underneath if you see that then shut off the light.

Bad news.  We lost them last night.  We ran the light all night the night before and everything was fine but last night was colder.  The only thing that seemed to go wrong was the cold.  They lived 4 days but we were having unusually warm weather those days.  i wanted to bring mamma and babies in the house, but I was afraid if I tore apart her nest and set it up differently in a new box in the house she would not have it.  They sure were cute little things! I learned for next time.

So sorry you lost them but this time of year is really hard on them.   I ususally pick up the box of babies , leave mom in her cage take babies in the house for the night and then take them back to mom in the morning.
